Professor Jin Shouguang from the College of Medicine of the University of Florida in the US was invited to TEDA Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology of Nankai University for academic exchanges at 10 a.m. on September 8, 2023. Professor Jin delivered a report on the theme of Bacterial Type III Protein Secretion System and Its Application

The type III secretion system (T3SS) is a needle-like transmembrane channel formed by multi-component protein complexes, mainly found in pathogenic bacteria. Pathogenic bacteria directly inject toxic proteins into host cells through T3SS. These toxic proteins can interfere with normal signaling pathways of host cells, including inducing or inhibiting cell phagocytosis and promoting cell apoptosis.Professor Jin Shouguang's report centered on the theme of Bacterial Type III Protein Secretion System and Its Application, introduced the relevant achievements of the research group in recent years, and focused on how to use bacterial T3SS as a tool to apply it to scientific research and medical research, including the use of T3SS to inject antigens into immune cells for vaccine development, and the use of T3SS for gene editing as well as time-specific signal transduction studies. At the conclusion of the lecture, the faculty and students of the institute engaged in intensive discussion with Professor Jin. This visit laid a solid foundation for future cooperation between our institute and the College of Medicine at the University of Florida in the field of pathogen-host interaction.

Jin Shouguang, male, received his Ph.D. from University of Washington, USA. From 1995 to 1999, he served as an assistant professor in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. From 1999 to 2005, he served as an associate professor in Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Since 2005, he has been a professor in Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Florida. His research interests include microbial physiology, biochemistry and genetics, pathogenic mechanism and drug resistance mechanism of pathogenic bacteria, application of microorganisms in biotechnology, directional differentiation of stem cells, and specific killing of tumor cells. He has published more than 100 papers in journals such as PNAS, Molecular Microbiology, mBio, Infection and Immunity.
